They will also learn about ways to avoid bullying, peer pressure, violent behavior and making good choices.Several safety topics such as Hunting, ATV, and Boating Safety are also included. This program was started by the Georgia Sheriff's Association and is taught to the 5th grade students by a Deputy Sheriff from your Sheriff's Office.

The CHAMPS program was established by the Georgia Sheriff’s Association in 2003. The program, Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety, CHAMPS, was designed when a group of Sheriff’s in Georgia got together and wanted an educational program that was developed around the problems that they were seeing in their communities and others around the state. CHAMPS is designed so that the Instructor and School systems change adapt it to the needs of the county and school.
CHAMPS is developed to be a twelve, 12, week program but can be shortened or extended to the need of the school schedule. The program is to be taught one day per week for a period of 50 – 60 minutes. There are 20 modules in CHAMPS: Alcohol, ATV Safety, Bullying, Choices and Consequences, Cocaine, Gangs, Home Alone Safety, Hunter Safety, Internet Safety, Leaders and Followers, Marijuana, Methamphetamines, Peer Pressure, Prescription Pills, Positive Alternatives, Stress, Tobacco, Violence, Water Safety. It also has an Introduction, CHAMPS Project, Post Test and Graduation. The current curriculum is designed for 5th grade but eventually going to extend the program to middle and high school. Each lesson is presented through Power Point presentation, hands on experiences, class room interaction and student workbooks. Each instructor of CHAMPS has to be a certified law enforcement officer from local Sheriff’ Office and undergo 80 hours of training to be certified as a CHAMPS Instructor.
GCCS and Glascock County Sheriff’s Office joined forces in early 2010 to bring the CHAMPS program to GCCS. Deputy Jeremy Kelley was sent to Georgia Sheriff’s Association and became a CHAMPS Instructor. He is currently teaching the 5th grade students about Bullying, Water Safety, Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana, Methamphetamine, Prescription Pills, and ATV Safety. A new lesson was added to our CHAMPS program this year. Deputy Kelley had partnered with McDuffie County 911 to add a 911 awareness lesson. The program is design to present to the students the idea of choices and consequences and give them a better education on some of the problems they will face in today’s world so that they can make better decisions.
The CHAMPS program is completely funded by the Glascock Co. Sheriff’s Office. The costs associated with the program such as: workbooks, graduation certificates, special items for students, etc. are all purchase using DATE account.
